What is Labradorite?

Labradorite is a greyish blue, green gemstone known for displaying iridescence, that is a phenomenon where a surface displays a play of lustrous and changing colours with the shifting angle of view. It is a feldspar mineral and gets its name from labradorescence which refers to the optical play displayed by this gemstone when moved in light or viewed from different angles.

The gemstone is generally found in the colours of grey with flashes of blue, green, gold or multicoloured. It scores 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale which means that it is a relatively hard stone. It can be used on an everyday basis but can be scratched by harder materials.

Labradorite is known as the stone of transformation and was first discovered in Labrador, Canada. According to native mythology, it was believed that the Northern lights were trapped inside the rocks of the Labrador coast. This was released by a warrior who struck the rocks with a spear and freed the lights but some of it remained trapped forever in the stone. It was considered a sacred stone by them for its protective qualities. The gemstone gained a lot of popularity in Europe in the 19th-20th century in the Art Nouveau period in jewellery and decorative arts.
